The Salon Secrets’ Guide To Going Blonde

The Salon Secrets' Guide to Going Blonde.

Summer may be coming to an end but that does not mean we are ditching the blonde hair! Every brunette will tell you they have considered going blonde at least once, but they can also tell you that trying to achieve the look can sometimes feel like a full time job! Let’s take a look at some myths, tips and tricks to get you blonder, safer and faster with this guide to going blonde.

TRUE BLONDE HAIR IS RARE

Blonde in all it’s shades is an extremely sought out hair colour, though even the most natural looking blondes are known to have some highlights. Approximately 2% of the world is naturally blonde and many natural blondes add highlights or lowlights for a bit of added dimension. Managing your expectations at the start of your hair journey can feel daunting and at times, discouraging. Trust a team of professionals to walk you through the process and build a treatment plan that’s in the best interest of your beauty goals AND hair health.

EVERY HEAD OF HAIR IS DIFFERENT

There are many factors to consider when going blonde. If not done properly, there is a risk of severe damage to your strands. Make sure to consult with your hairdresser before making the jump to blonde. Every head of hair is different! Your hair type, texture and tone will all be taken into consideration when determining the timeline required to reach your goals. Be sure you aren’t rushing the process and listen to the advice of a professional, to avoid making common hair care mistakes.

 THE PRICE OF BEAUTY

We have all heard that blondes have more fun but trust us when we say it’s the price of beauty! Maintaining blonde hair is a big commitment, and one that you should not underestimate. Reaching your desired shade of blonde can be a lengthy process, but maintenance is an equally important step! Going blonde requires multiple hair appointments each year, with an added investment in the right products to keep your hair healthy, vibrant and strong.

 DDIY (DON'T DO IT YOURSELF)

Although many of us dove into the idea of DIY projects during quarantine, never bleach your hair at home. We have all seen enough Brad Mundo videos to understand the horror that can come with box dyed hair and at-home remedies. From brassy orange colour to chemical breakage, you won’t save time nor money by skipping the salon.

 KEEP IT TONED

And no, we are not talking about the gym! Leaving the salon with fresh highlights and a blowout is arguably the best feeling, and one you want to last. To avoid brassy undertones which creep up over time over time, make sure to purchase a good purple shampoo! The violet properties work to cut out the yellow tones in your hair, as it saturates from the opposite side of the colour wheel. A common misconception is that this shampoo is only suited for bleach blondes - FASLE! It can be used on darker shades of blonde as well, and functions as a conditioner to nourish hair and prevent breakage. Pack your beauty arsenal with a trusty shampoo + conditioner combo, and our favourite Anti-Brass Mask for a little extra brightening support.

AVOID BREAKAGE

It is often thought that blonde hair grows slower than brunette. Though this is not exactly true, blonde strands are more prone to breakage which can make it seem as though it is taking longer for your hair to grow. To strengthen hair and encourage healthy growth we recommend using the OLAplex formula, both in-salon and at home. Bundle No.0 and No.3 solutions for the ultimate fighting power against brittle damage.

STAY SLEEK 'N' SHINY

Excessive bleaching can lead to weaker strands and dull looking hair. Give them a pick-me-up by treating your hair to a hydrating hair mask. Try out Authentic Beauty Concept’s hydrating mask for a lightweight treatment that will keep your mane smooth and manageable - a blonde MUST! This mask is the perfect remedy for dry hair as it features mango and basil ingredients, both known for their hydrating & soothing properties.

After all, they do say blondes have more fun!

Summer Hair, Don’t Care. Tips for Seasonal Maintenance

Summer Hair, Don't Care. Tips For Seasonal Maintenance.

Everyone loves the summer heat and the activities that come with it. Sun, swimming, and humidity are just some of the seasonal factors that can take a toll on your locks. Using these tips and tricks from our team of professionals, adopt a summer hair care routine that is sure to beat the heat!

Keep it covered

As important as it is to use the right products for your hair, the best way to keep it protected is to keep it covered. Wearing a hat or a scarf will help protect your hair from UV rays while protecting your scalp from sun damage. Try and have some fun with it! There are plenty of scarf and hat styles that will keep you protected and elevate your outfits. Bucket hats, beach hats, and baseball hats are all trendy options that can really tie a look together.

Conditioner is key

Much like drinking more water in the summer to stay hydrated, your hair needs the same kind of attention. Make sure to keep your hair moist and healthy this summer by using hydrating products and deep conditioners. Try using the Colour Extending Conditioner by REDKEN to keep your colour-treated hair from fading, and lock in the moisture that you might be missing. Hydration does not mean washing your hair more often. This will actually dry out your scalp and strip it of the natural oils that your hair requires to withstand the heat.

 Avoid salt and chlorine

If you’re a blonde, you may have heard about your hair turning green after swimming in a chlorinated pool. It is not a myth! Chlorine can cause chemical reactions in your hair which change the natural colour, weaken each hair strand, and increase split ends! This damage doesn’t only apply to blondes, but appears more noticeable on lighter saturation. Chlorine sucks the natural oils from your hair and skin, leaving them dry, rough, and damaged. Salt, although better than chlorine, will still dry out your hair, leaving it frail and damaged. If a swimming cap is not your choice of style, you can fight potential damage by rinsing your hair prior to going in the pool or ocean, conditioning afterwards, and applying hair oils. Using a conditioner like the Hydrate Cleansing Conditioner by Authentic Beauty Concept is great for cleaning out chlorine and salt after a refreshing swim.

 Fight the frizz

Summer schedules can fill up quickly and is often one of the busiest times of year, but it is crucial to not miss a trim. Even while growing out your hair, trimming it will get rid of split ends and damaged hair, encouraging healthier growth. One your days off, use hair masks and oils to smooth frizz and reverse sun damage. Whenever possible, avoid direct heat and styling to combat unwanted static and friction on the surface of your locks. Try the Hydrating Mask by Authentic Beauty Concept to repair damaged hair and bring back a smooth and healthy style.

 do less damage

Opt for a beachy look and avoid using those hot tools. Try blow drying your hair on a cooler setting for half the amount of time or, use clips and headbands to style it back. While it’s tempting to put your hair up tight when enjoying summer activities, try to wear loose styles that avoid breakage. Using a wide-tooth comb, especially when your hair is wet, is the best way to avoid tugging and pulling at those sensitive strands, causing further damage. Make sure to pack one in your bag when you head to the beach!

2020’s trending hair treatment

2020's Trending Hair Treatment

You have probably seen or heard that hair masks are the freshest addition to your self-care routine. We put our hair through a lot, including colour treatments, heat damage as well as throwing it up in a bun on those busier days. Let our stylists tell you why hair masks are an essential part of your hair care routine.

What is a Hair Mask?

Only have a few minutes between calls, or need to get in bed early? Hair masks pack a big punch, providing moisture, nourishment, and protection in just minutes. Hair masks are treatments made up of nourishing ingredients like oils and butters that work to make your hair stronger and healthier. Hair masks penetrate deep into your hair to accelerate shine and repair damage.

When to Use a Hair Mask

As the winter months approach, it is important to hydrate your hair with more than your average shampoo and conditioner. Masks can be applied in the bath or shower, so they are perfect for an at-home spa day to keep your hair looking fresh between hair appointments.

What Hair Mask is Right for Me?

Like any hair product, masks should be targeted to your specific hair type and help repair dryness, minimize breakage, or maintain color-treated hair.

Dryness: There are many reasons you may experience dry hair, including the weather, not using the right shampoo/conditioner, or even washing your hair too much. No matter the reason contributing to your dry hair, everyone would like hydrated, healthy-looking hair. Dryness is targeted best by using masks that contain oils, butters, and honey.

Our Stylists recommend Authentic Beauty Concept's Hydrate Mask. An intense yet lightweight that moisturizes normal to dry or curly hair brings back elasticity, bounce, and shine

Breakage: There are many masks made to target broken, damaged hair specifically. If you are trying to grow out your hair or maintain it between appointments, a hair mask is a great way to alternate trimming your ends. Masks containing proteins or vitamins will work best to rejuvenate your hair.

Our Stylists recommend Olaplex #3 an at-home treatment that reduces breakage and visibly strengthens hair, improving its look and feel.

Fading Colour: Colouring your hair can be damaging, but some want to update our look as the seasons change. Using a hair mask targeted to maintain colour will help build a protective layer over your coloured hair and extend the life of the shade you love. For colour treated hair, look for a mask that contains amino acids and is sulfate-free.

Our Stylists recommend Authentic Beauty Concept Glow Mask. This mask preserves hair colour and provides intense nourishment for colour-treated hair.

Take control and fight the frizz

September 3, 2021

Take control and fight the frizz

The changing weather can play havoc with our hair and once that static takes hold, it’s a relentless fight against the frizz. However, there are some simple steps you can take to minimize the chance of fly-aways and frizz.

Upgrade your towel

We’re sure you’ve seen these, those handy little microfibre hair towels with a loop to keep it secure? Well, they’re not just a gimmick. Rather than towel drying and rubbing your hair, which can cause breakage, invest in a microfibre towel for your hair. They are super absorbent, reduce the friction caused by rubbing and help to stop frizz in its tracks. They are also great for keeping your hair out of your way while applying makeup - it’s a win-win!

A handy tip

It can be tempting to try to remove every knot with a brush in an attempt to smooth your unruly locks but when drying, try using your hands. Point the hairdryer so that the air is going from root to end to smooth the hair as it dries. Use your fingers to comb through your hair and pull each section under the hairdryer.

Avoid hair straighteners

The trusty hair straightener is always there to solve your hair woes but in the case of static and frizz, it’s best to take a rain check. Instead, we recommend using a mixed bristle brush. Hold it in one hand and with the other, push down as you brush through your hair, it will act as an iron to smooth away static and add shine.

Spray with caution

Another go-to for frizz and fly away hairs is to pin it down with hairspray. Just remember that less is more. Always hold the can at arm’s length and mist the hair. Alternatively, you can mist your hands and smooth them over the frizz.

We love great colour and here’s why you should too…

September 3, 2021

We love great colour and here’s why you should too…

It elevates your cut

Our stylists love a good cut and creating a new style for our clients. Mix in some great colour and a good cut becomes so much more. Accents of colour add texture so the cut will never look dull or flat, as well as adding extra shape to more blunt styles.  Perfectly placed light flecks of colour can amplify the hair’s natural tones and texture.

It complements your complexion

We’re not afraid to tell our clients if they’re making a huge mistake! Our team will ensure that the styling and colour are perfect for your face shape and complexion. Just like adding highlighter or contour to your makeup to accentuate your features, the right colour can also work to make your skin glow. Adding softer, lighter tones to frame the face will brighten up your skin too.

Eyes on the prize

Bright flowers in the garden or an accent cushion on the couch, we all know how a simple bit of colour can make a difference. Hair colour is no different and our experts understand how skin and eye colour work with your style. Subtle tones in hair colouring can really make your eyes pop and we work with the individual to find a unique blend to suit your colouring.

Great colour simplifies styling

It’s a fact of life that colouring dries out hair. However, this isn’t all bad. It can add volume and texture making styles easier to hold. Even a simple ponytail with the right combination of delicate colours will have movement, texture and personality.

If you look good, you feel good!

Over the past few years, there has been a greater emphasis on self-care. Hair colour can transform a person’s look and in turn, make them feel better about themselves. While we’re aware that it’s not a fix-all solution, there’s nothing quite like leaving a salon with fresh colour to put a pep in your step! As no two people are the same, their hair shouldn’t be either. We work with our clients to channel that unique individuality into great hairstyles.

Our favourite products that your hair will love

Here are some of our favourite products by Redken, available to buy in our online store.

Hair Cleansing Cream Shampoo

New to Redken’s product range, this gorgeous shampoo is the MVP for getting your hair in tip-top shape before your next salon visit. The shampoo clarifies and works to remove impurities leaving hair shiny and free of build-up and ready for colouring. Often, shampooing will only wash off surface build-up but it’s important to ensure that your scalp is clean and healthy too. Lather, rinse, repeat are words we live by!

All Soft Mega Mega Mask

Yes, it really is mega mega!  Developed for extremely dry and coarse hair, this dual formula combines the deep conditioning of a mask with the lasting benefits of a care extender. The mask provides nourishment for mega soft hair that lasts through 3 washes. In 3-5 minutes, your hair will be hydrated and nourished.

Redken Brews Thickening Pomade

Redken Brews Thickening Pomade makes hair look instantly fuller. It has a densifying finish and it’s great for fine hair, thinning or adding body to limp hair. The non-greasy formula offers mild reworkable control and washes out easily.

Pillow Proof Blow Dry Two Day Extender Dry Shampoo

Good hair takes time but Redken’s style-extending dry shampoo offers a helping hand by extending the life of your blow-dry by two days. It instantly refreshes hair and absorbs oil for tested "pillow proof" results. There is also no strong chemical smell like other brands, as it features touch-activated fragrance – capsules burst every time you touch your hair for a constantly fresh fragrance! It leaves no powdery residue and it’s great for prepping hair for updos and styling by adding texture. This product gets the thumbs up from us!
