The Ultimate Guide To Going Red This Fall!

Everyone's favourite season is finally here! It’s time to dig up our cozy sweaters and enjoy pumpkin spice and everything nice! When the leaves start to change, it’s time to transition our hair colour to something deep and dimensional. This season’s hottest hair colour is red! We have seen many celebs make the copper plunge and have been loving this hair colour process here at the salon. Keep reading to follow our ultimate guide to going red this fall!

Ditch the Ponytail

This fall we’re ditching the tight ponytail. This look is cute and easy to do during the summer but it causes breakage and damage; something we don’t want in the cooler seasons. If putting your hair up is a must, opt for a looser look and switch to using a claw clip or silk scrunchie to minimize breakage.

Find Your Shade

There are so many shades of red to choose from, so finding the perfect one for you may take some time. We suggest finding a shade to match your skin's undertones over choosing the most vibrant colour of red. Here is our quick rule of thumb when choosing your perfect shade of red:

  • For pale skin tones: try rose, gold and copper tones
  • For olive skin tones: try plum and berry tones
  • For darker skin tones: try cherry and wine tones
  • For natural blondes: try coppery highlights

It's always best to come to your appointment with some inspiration so our stylists know what you’re looking for and can work with you to find your perfect colour.

Bleach May Not Be Necessary for Brunettes!

Good news for all brunettes! The transition from brown to red is smooth for the most part, thanks to the red undertones in some darker hair colours. Dark hair has a lot of natural red undertones that can turn orange which is perfect for anyone looking to switch to a natural-looking shade of red.

Some Tips For Our Blonde Babes

Be aware that transitioning to red from a blonde base may be a two-step process. Going from blonde to red is a significant change and can take some adjustment. But don't fret, you don’t have to commit to red hair permanently.  Going back to blonde for the warmer months should happen in early April and we’ll be here when you’re ready to go back to your roots.

Prepare For More Maintenance

We always suggest switching from washing your hair daily to every other day when changing to red. This will help prevent colour fading and your colour will last twice as long. When maintaining your new hair colour, we also recommend booking in with one of our colourists every six weeks to prevent colour fading. It is also essential to keep up with your at-home maintenance and give your hair the TLC it needs!

Invest In Quality At-Home Care

Hair maintenance doesn't stop at the salon. We always recommend using a colour-safe shampoo and conditioner to help extend the vibrance of your new colour. Redken’s Colour Extend Magnetics shampoo and conditioner are perfect for any new redhead as these products help keep hair colour from fading and retain your hair’s radiant shine. A weekly hair mask is also a good step to add to your routine to help keep your hair moisturized!

Red is really having a moment this fall and we want to help you make the change. Book your next hair colour appointment with our professional stylists and fall in love with your new hair this season!
