"Fall" Into New Haircare For a New Season
As the leaves begin to change, your hair care routine should do the same. A change in temperature, moisture and style calls for some extra TLC as we enter the colder months, in need of weatherized protection. Much like a warm coat and pair of boots, it’s time to dig out those tried and true hacks from the back of the closet that will keep your hair looking fresh this Fall.
DON'T FORGET THESE MUST "DO'S"
INCREASE MOISTURE
TRY A CLARIFYING SHAMPOO
With summer, comes many activities that inevitably leave build up in your hair. A trip to the beach can leave your hair full of sunscreen and sand, and don’t even get us started on those spray tans! Try adding a clarifying shampoo to your routine every other week to rid your hair of any excess build up, and allow your strands to breathe again. What do we mean by clarifying shampoo? Think of this as a heavy-duty cleaner that digs deep to the hair follicle, leaving you with a clean slate. *be mindful to incorporate this only on an occasional basis, as you don’t want to over scrub and wash away those natural oils*
GRAB A VOLUMIZER
Don’t let your hair FALL flat this season… get it!? With a gradual lack of humidity you are bound to experience less bounce and volume in your day-to-day styles. We know that there’s often damage which comes with heat styling, so it’s important to find a way to increase hair volume without it. A salon-quality volumizer will help to give you that extra boost, while delivering key nutrients and a natural feel. We love Authentic Beauty Concept’s Amplify Mousse for it’s lightweight hold and protection properties.
ADD EXTRA HEAT PROTECTANT
Give up heat products!? Although the best way to keep your hair in healthy habits, this is also easier said than done - even we love our soft waves and sleek styles! With the colder weather upon us, challenge yourself to turn back the heat when possible and amp up the protectant. Heat protectant acts as a protective barrier between your hair and a hot tool, preventing extensive damage, burning and breaking. Using heat protectant is a simple step in your routine that will save your hair from frizz, distress, and better prepare for a more luscious style. We swear by Redken’s One United, for it’s 25 different benefits! In addition to protecting from the heat and other environmental factors, this spray-on magic helps to prime, style, and seal your hair follicle, leaving you with strong, nourished strands that can withstand the heat of an iron, and the cold outside your door.
COMMIT TO A HAIR MASK
This is a MUST! Using a hair mask will help moisturize and nourish your strands, from top to bottom. Think of it like a mini spa-day for your scalp, improving the overall health, look and feel of your hair. Especially beneficial for drier, damaged hair, there is a mask fit for every hair type, in every season. Considered a super-powered condition, your hair mask can be applied on whatever schedule works best for you. We recommend bi-weekly or monthly treatments, to maintain overall shine and manageability. Some of our cult-classics include:
Olaplex No.3
Redken Blondage Anti-Brass Mask
Authentic Beauty Concept: Glow Mask
Authentic Beauty Concept: Hydrate Mask
MAYBE "DON'T" CONTINUE THESE HABITS
DITCH THE PONYTAIL
Fall is the perfect time to let your hair down. Throwing your hair up feels necessary in the summer with those extra long and hot days, however it is known to cause breakage and stress to the scalp. Opt for a looser style this season, and leave the harsh ties behind - especially for bedtime! We know it’s a simple hair style on those bad hair days, but try using a hat or headband to change things up. We like to recommend braiding or loosely twisting the hair overnight, for an effortless style come the morning - no pony needed!
LEAVE THE BLEACH BEHIND
Summer is known for bright highlights paired with sunkissed skin… but honey, both of these looks fade away. While going a few shades darker with your Fall style is known to be trendy, it’s also a great way to add protein back into the hair and re-stimulate the hair follicle, prepping it for regrowth. Are you a blonde through and through? That’s okay too! Space out your appointments and use at-home blonding products to maintain your colour, without increased bleaching. Ask your stylist to learn more about adding depth to your style without losing that hard-earned brightness.
AVOID FREQUENT WASHES
Don't worry, the dirty look is in (kidding!) But do try your best to avoid washing your hair as frequently this season, to help your locks build and maintain the natural oils that are derived from the scalp. Over scrubbing can dry out your strands and damage your hair by stripping it of the nutrients that are needed to protect it from its environment. Challenge yourself to gradually increase the time between washes, and invest in salon-grade products to help maintain your desired look, even when not freshly styled.
LOWER THE TEMP OF YOUR SHOWER
There’s nothing like a hot shower after a long day, but when it comes to your hair specifically, the cooler the better. Water that’s too hot prevents the hair and skin from locking in moisture, which can lead to a dry and irritated scalp. Just like you would protect your hair from heat styling, you want to keep it away from extremely hot water for the same reasons. Start by altering the temperature to luke warm when washing, then knock it back to cool for your rinse cycle. This helps to seal the follicle (hello, split ends) and prevent further breakage when you towel dry and comb the strands, post-shower.
